Kettlebell Workouts Primer — Weight Training, Russian Style
Tuesday 26 January 2010 @ 3:51 pm

Whatever you might have thought, the idea of the kettlebell isn’t a fresh idea. The current belief would have them approximately three hundred years old. But over the past few years kettlebells have shot to worldwide fame, and by today they are as popular as any workout accessory.

The only things you need are the weights themselves and anybody can begin using these simple steps. Clearly, the more advanced exercises call for more practice before you incorporate them. Always learn to walk before you try to run, as they say. Whatever else you do, with kettlebells as with all weight training, you must take care that you order the best weight for your body. And, with these kinds of exercises, the weights used are surprisingly light. For female beginners, an eighteen lb kettlebell can be more than required to start with, and meanwhile men should choose the 35lb size. The explanation lies in how the exercise benefits you. With a Russian kettlebell it comes from the movement rather than from how much weight is employed. It’s also smart to buy an instructional video or brochure to learn from and ensure you perform the exercises right.

The first routine to master with the kettlebell is the two-handed swing. This move forms the basis of many other techniques, and its easy appearance is misleading. Sudden halts, awkward motion — these are hardly what you ought to be trying for. A handy health & safety pointer is worth repeating before you begin: your spine shouldn’t be used to lift the weights. Instead, use your hips.

Having mastered this basic building block, you can take a stab at the difficult routines. In order to retain your motivation, variation is useful — you might adjust the accompanying music, rotate techniques in and out of the workout program, et cetera. Later on, while your experience level increases, you could perhaps adjust the weights and perhaps incorporate a second set. Following these tips, you’ll make sure your muscles are exerting at full capacity and not risk any plateauing.

One thing we really should repeat here is that Russian kettlebells won’t help you develop your muscle mass or play much of a role in bodybuilding. What they’ll do is help you shed weight, enhance muscle tone, and enhance all-round health and stamina. One last pointer, fold a Russian kettlebell session to your pre-existing exercise regime. Keep in mind that it’s your own choice how frequently you make use of the maneuvers. With a couple of routines each week, it’s a nobrainer to maintain your baseline physique. And if you step up to five or six you can lose excess fat in no time!

Nicol said that she was surprised to have won the title in straight sets, stating that it was a closer match than the actual score indicated.

In the men’s side, Egypt’s Amr Shabana collected his fifth Hong Kong Open title after his opponent, France’s Gregory Gaultier, was forced to retire in the fourth set due to knee injury.

Gaultier retired while Shabana was leading 5-2 in the fourth set. The Egyptian player won the first and third sets but lost the second which led the match to go into the fourth set.
