Following the occurrence of Legionnaires’ disease in Nottingham Prison, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has cautioned businesses in the UK to be on the lookout for the disease. The HSE had previously called for the HM Prison Service to account for this case.
On 8th March, 2006 Legionnaires’ was detected in a Nottingham Prison inmate. After an investigation by the HSE, it was found that the disease was caused by legionella bacteria growing in the hot and cold water system in the Health Unit of the prison. The HSE found that the prison did not adhere to the Approved Code of Practise (AcoP) for controlling the levels of legionella in the water systems.
As this was a violation of Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act of 1974, HSE launched a Crown Censure on HM Prison Service.
