GPS Trackers And Their Most Popular Uses
Saturday 2 January 2010 @ 12:58 pm

GPS became available in the 1980’s. For a long time the technology was only used by the military. It then became popular as a tracking system in cars. GPS Trackers are used for a variety of purposes, such as in cars, trucks and cell phones. Companies that have a large fleet of vehicles, such as a trucking companies or taxi cab and limousine services use GPS to track the locations of their drivers. They are also used as a safety precaution in the event that one of their vehicles is stolen or if a driver radios in that they are hurt or in danger, the problem of figuring out their location will be eliminated. The most common consumer use of GPS tracking systems is seen in automobile digital maps - a good resource for planning trips or helping drivers find new places without getting lost.

The use of GPS trackers is not limited to digital automobile street maps. GPS trackers are now being anonymously used to track a people. This is especially popular in families where a teenager drives the family car, and the teenager is suspected of doing things or going places they have been told not to go.

Choosing a GPS tracking system can often be overwhelming. Google’s directory lists over 200 companies that provide GPS systems. Here are some brand names to consider when buying a GPS unit: Garmin, Navam, Magellan, Tele Type, Rocky Mountain Tracking, GPS Tracker. Many popular cell phone brands now have GPS functionalities built in.

Science is also beginning to use GPS trackers as a way to help conduct experiments and learn more about animal movements. Researchers can put collars with GPS trackers on nearly any kind of animal ranging from a bear to a mountain goat. Dog owners are also starting to buy dog collars with GPS trackers built in, to make it easy to find their pet in the event it gets lost, stolen or runs away. They are also being used as safety devices to track young children and even older patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and other similar physically disorienting diseases. Even the GPS built into cell phones come in handy in search and rescue missions for emergency personnel, who can use a GPS tracking device to locate anyone whose cell phone has GPS built in.

The company announced its plans to join the 21st Century Network (CN) bandwagon to trial a new fibre broadband network. The selected customers are expected to benefit from the trials that officially started in October.

Zen Internet Plans to Launch 20 Mb Broadband Service
Thursday 2 July 2009 @ 9:25 am

Zen Internet has announced its plan to join the already existing BT’s 21 CN network, aiming at the opening of an ADSL2+ service, which will enable them to achieve the 20Mb speed target in broadband services.

According to Zen, in the beginning internet users will get a similar service for the same price, but will later experience an increase in download speeds. It is expected that new users will be provided with up to 20 Mb broadband service if it is accessible in that particular locality.

It is observed that the speed of the service depends on where the user is located and where the local exchange is situated. However, Zen Internet feels that the aim of the 20 Mb download feature and the ‘up to 1Mb’ upload speed can be achieved depending on the quality of the BT exchange’s external wiring and the internal wiring in the customers’ premises.

However, the increased download speed as promised by Zen Internet might take some time to materialise. According to the company, the internet speed is expected to increase by the beginning of 2010 and they hold the insufficient numbers of BT engineers responsible for the situation. According to them, due to the inadequate workforce, the task of migrating to the 20 Mb Broadband service will take at least another eight months.

Brits Do Not Have Basic Knowledge of Internet and Broadband
Tuesday 12 May 2009 @ 10:54 am

Virgin Media has recently conducted a survey among the British, which reveals that around 15% of them believe the cause of slow broadband connections to be tangled wires. The aim of the study was to find out whether the British were aware of the technology and terminology of internet and all the related technologies that come along with it. Around 3000 people were surveyed, and the results have turned out to be quite astonishing.

7% of the respondents thought that Blu-Ray was a kind of internet service. This just proves that most people in Britain are not aware of even the basics of the technology that they are surrounded with all the time. More than 50% did not know about their broadband speeds (click here for a quick mobile broadband speedtest), which indicates they might not be aware of their broadband terms and conditions, download limits and internet security as well. This makes it easy for the service providers to exploit them.

Strangely, half of the respondents also seemed to believe that a phone connection was required to get access to broadband services. 45% were unaware of the basics of mobile broadband including the meaning of the term ‘dongle’. Ironically, these are things that most Brits use daily at home and at the workplace.

Therefore, Richard Branson, boss of Virgin Media wants to introduce the idea of ‘Broadband Schools‘ in areas with least knowledge according to the survey, such as Birmingham, Leeds and Belfast. Branson said that he himself was not aware of many technological intricacies and was a prime candidate for the school once it starts. However, the company has not set a deadline regarding when these schools would start.

Lord Carter Hints at BBC’s Role in Making Britain Truly Digital
Thursday 19 March 2009 @ 8:07 am

Lord Carter, the Communications Minister of Britain, has submitted the interim Digital Britain report, which was put forward to the MPs for questions. He stated that the main objective of the plan was to ensure that everyone in Britain has access to faster and better broadband services for which the benchmark speed has been put at 2Mb. He said that this upgrade of broadband services was now a necessity to ensure that the country was at par with the rest of the developed world in terms of digital communication services. He also emphasised that a significant 20% of the media’s services were currently being consumed through the Internet and this overhaul of broadband services was vital.

However, the most notable part of the discussion came about when he was questioned about the funding that would be required for such a massive revamp. Lord Carter said that that the most likely solution would be public-private collaboration and it was quite probable that the BBC would have a major role to play in that. He further added that the report included a comprehensive strategy that would be needed to achieve the goal of faster connectivity across the country.

Lord Carter also shared a three-step strategy that defines the plan. The first is that the minimum stipulated provision of broadband speed as per the European Law needs to be increased from 56Kb to 2Mb. The second step includes planning the development of the necessary infrastructure that will be required for establishing such services. This includes mobile broadband, fixed line broadband and access via satellite. The final step would be to ensure that enough financing is made available to make the plan a reality.

An Appeal for Help with My Broadband Connection
Friday 26 December 2008 @ 9:20 am

I have decided to change my mobile broadband Internet supplier. I have seen a couple of adverts around and I have realized that I am actually paying far more for my service than I really should. Let’s face it, in this economy it is vital that we cut bills where we can and it turns out my mobile bill is definitely somewhere that has some room for cutting.

But now it seems I have a million and one options. I am looking for a very cheap, if not the cheapest broadband connection I can, that still provides quality customer service. But I look online and most of the offers and comparison sites are rather confusing, I found all the info I needed on Broadbandgenie.co.uk but by that point, I felt I needed outside help.

So I need you guys to help me find a UK broadband connection for as little as possible.

I don’t mind who you recommend, so long as when I read about it I understand what they are talking about, not just a bunch of numbers and letters that make no sense.

I have been tempted by the idea of taking my laptop around the country and constantly having access to broadband. Has anyone used this?
